Navigating the ever-expanding world of protein powder supplements can be a downright headache, however, with a few key criteria you can make this job a lot easier.

When searching for a high-quality protein powder there are a few important things to consider - some are what I believe to be essential (e.g. protein quality, sourcing principles, business ethos) and others come down to personal preference (e.g. taste, texture, cost)

I've been using True Protein WPI 90 consistently for many years, so in this comprehensive first-hand review, I'll take you through everything I know and love about it and what I think you might need to consider before purchasing.

True Protein WPI 90 Review: By Darcy - The Bircher Bar Owner & Founder

I've probably had more of this specific protein powder over the years than all other protein powders combined.

What I Like About It:

Quality Brand - True Protein is one of the most respected and reputable Australian protein suppliers and manufacturers. They have excellent and highly-transparent sourcing and manufacturing principles - all centred around creating the safest, cleanest and most effective products they can. Any minor issues I've ever encountered over the years have been addressed immediately by a friendly and helpful customer support agent every time. Furthermore, they also offer Free Shipping over $99 and a 100% Money Back Guarantee.

Taste - This is obviously a personal preference, but the taste of the True Protein WPI 90 is top shelf. Not overly sweet nor 'fermented' - it is smooth and slightly milky. French Vanilla & Chocolate are my 2 top picks, however, there are now a few to choose from if you're feeling adventurous.

Mixability & Texture - I think most people will agree that mixability and texture are important. No one wants a 'chalky' texture, or even worse, to be chewing clumps of dry protein powder. Luckily for you - this powder mixes perfectly. Just make sure you get the right amount of liquid in the shaker (~340ml of milk or water) with your mixing ball and you'll get a great mix every time.

What You Should Consider:

Cost - It is by no means the cheapest Whey Protein Isolate on the market but in my experience, you don't want cheap when it comes to protein. There are too many dodgy powders out there and anything that's cheap is usually cutting corners somewhere, often when it comes to protein purity and quality. If you do need to opt for something cheaper than this - make sure you do your research.

Summary:

Pros:

  • Great product from a respected and reliable company
  • Excellent taste, texture and mixability

Cons:

  • Pricier than some others on the market (you get what you pay for in this game though)

What Is True Protein WPI 90?

True Protein WPI 90, short for Whey Protein Isolate 90, is one of the flagship protein supplements from True Protein. The 'WPI 90' indicates that it is a 'Whey Protein Isolate' (as opposed to a 'Whey Protein Concentrate') with at least a 90% protein content per serving.

True Protein WPI 90 originates solely from grass-fed cow's milk, which is nutritionally superior compared to grain-fed cow's milk due to its higher content of essential fatty acids and antioxidants, including omega-3s and beta-carotene.

The method used to obtain the whey protein in True Protein WPI 90 is called 'cold ultra-filtration.' This technique operates at low temperatures, preserving the bioactive compounds in the whey and preventing their denaturation. As a result, the protein supplement maintains much of its original nutritional profile.

Furthermore, the cold ultra-filtration process also removes most of the fats and lactose from the product. This makes True Protein WPI 90 an appropriate option for individuals with lactose intolerance, who often struggle to find suitable whey protein products.

Why Take True Protein WPI 90?

Aside from being one of the best protein sources for muscle growth and development, WPI 90 can also contribute to various other aspects of general health and well-being.

Such as:

  1. Weight Management: High-protein diets have been linked to increased satiety and reduced caloric intake, which can be beneficial for weight management. Additionally, protein has a high thermic effect, meaning your body uses more energy to digest it compared to fats and carbohydrates, potentially aiding in weight loss.

  2. Enhanced Immune Function: Whey protein contains immunoglobulins, which are antibodies that support immune function. Additionally, it is a good source of cysteine, a precursor to glutathione, one of the body's key antioxidants that play a crucial role in maintaining a robust immune system.

  3. Supports Bone Health: Whey protein is a good source of calcium, a mineral essential for bone health. Regular intake of adequate protein and calcium can help maintain bone density and strength, reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

  4. Gut Health: Although low in lactose, True Protein WPI 90 still contains beneficial components such as lactoferrin, which has been shown to have a positive impact on gut health by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria.

Where To Buy True Protein WPI90?

From gyms and health studios to supplement stores and supermarkets - True Protein WPI90 is stocked all over Australia at this point.

That being said, I prefer to buy it directly from them online as they offer Free Shipping, a money-back guarantee and the freshest stock possible.

Manufacturer's Details:

The following specifications come straight from True Protein themselves and should help give a bit more insight into the nutritionals of the product and exactly how the WPI90 is made.

Leading Manufacturing Processes

Our whey protein isolate is manufactured using a combination of both cross-flow microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) to provide an extremely pure and refined protein powder.

Less Than 1% Carbs & Sugar

The carbohydrates and lactose that are present in whey protein concentrate are removed when making whey protein isolate, making it one of the purest proteins in our range.

High in Protein

Whey protein isolate has one of the highest protein contents of any known substance to man. In its natural form, WPI boasts over 90% protein content, making it ideal for supporting lean muscle growth and post-workout recovery.

Fast-digesting

The bioavailability of whey protein isolate means it is quickly digested by the body to provide essential amino acids for fuel or recovery.

New Zealand-sourced Whey

Not all protein powders are made equally, New Zealand proteins are considered the best in the world due to industry-leading livestock processes and strict government regulations.

Rich Amino Acid Profile

Whey protein isolate contains a complete amino acid profile ideal for repairing muscles and providing vital nutrition to the body.

    Suggested Use:

Add 1 Large TP Scoop (30g) to 150ml-200ml of liquid of your choice. Shake and consume. Consume 1-3 servings daily or as required.

True Protein recommends as a guideline 1.5 to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight. This recommendation is based on the assumption that your goals are to build lean muscle and enhance recovery. This translates to an 80kg person taking roughly 120g to 160g of protein per day. We recommend that you fulfill this quota through a combination of wholefoods and protein supplementation.

    Other Customer Reviews:

With over 3000+ reviews on their site alone for an average of 4.9 / 5 - it's safe to say I'm not the only one who rates it! Here are some of the top reviews that give a bit of insight into other people's experiences of it:

    • 'I've tried a lot of proteins but True Protein is top tier! The creamiest with real ingredients. I've got so many of my friends and family addicted!' - Ali A.
    • 'Delicious and creamy without being overly sweet, true protein WPI90 really is the best whey protein on the market!' - Kelly A.
    • 'I have been using this protein for 3+ years now, wouldn’t use anything else. It was recommended to me by a dietician, and I’m so glad I was introduced to it. It tastes delicious, doesn’t upset my stomach, and works in all forms (shake, smoothie, protein balls, pancakes, oats etc.). Love it!' - Riley F.

Alternatives To True Protein WPI 90:

I love this protein powder, but there are many reasons you may want to try an alternative. Here are some other options I use and enjoy.

    1.) True Protein WPC 80:

This is another great whey protein option from True Protein, however, it is a concentrate and not an isolate meaning that it contains a bit less protein per serve along with some extra calories, fat and carbohydrates and lactose (+ vitamins and minerals). It is also cheaper than the WPI 90 as it only goes through a single filtration process.

    2.) True Plant Protein:

This is a great option if you're following a plant-based diet or you find whey protein can upset your stomach. It combines 3 different sources of plant protein (Australian yellow pea, Australian faba bean and organic pumpkin seed) with added probiotics and digestive enzymes for enhanced absorption.

3.) White Wolf Whey Better Protein Blend:

If you're interested in trying another brand entirely, White Wolf Nutrition is another Australian producer that makes excellent protein powders and sports nutrition. This is a Whey Protein Concentrate that contains added probiotics, digestive enzymes and hydrolysed collagen.

    Final Thoughts:

True Proteins WPI90 is my go-to protein of choice on most days.

A great flavour and texture combined with a super high and clean protein content make it hard to beat. Furthermore, True Protein as a brand and company showcases great customer service, ethics and sourcing principles to top it all off.

If you're training or playing hard, or simply looking to up your general dietary protein intake - this is the best option on the market in my opinion.
