Teelixir Astragalus Review By Sacky - The Bircher Bars Head Product Tester
What I Like:
The Major Boost- The list of benefits that come with using Astragalus every day is extensive. It's other known title 'The Great Protector' says it all, it's a potent tonic that aids in helping the bodies natural defence system. This includes immunity but also supports the recovery of any type of body trauma, making it particularly popular with different fitness enthusiasts and helpful in injury healing.
Heart & Lungs- Astragalus has been proven to tonify lungs, which I love as I've struggled with lung damage from a bad case of pneumonia. Now when I start to get that pesky cough (normally after a surf), I up my dose of Astragalus and find it goes away and also the occurrence of that cough coming back is lessening.
Another one is the heart! Astragalus assists to widen blood vessels allowing more blood to be pumped in and out of the heart. I also have bad circulation but found after regular Astragalus use that it started to improve.
Company Values - The founders of Teelixir are transparent about their journey to health and you can tell they aren't just in it to try to make money, they love what they do and truly believe in it. You can read about their journey here.
They very carefully source their ingredients to provide high-quality blends that are semi-wild and sustainable, with all blends being independently tested for heavy metals and contaminants. Bircher Bars founder Darcy will vouch for great customer service in all his dealings with them. To top it off, they also have Afterpay and free shipping available.
What Could Be Improved
The packaging. We'd love to see a more sustainable or even reusable packaging. One of Teelixirs competitors uses Miron glass jars which we love, but understandably does make the product slightly more expensive.

What Is Astragalus?
The Astragalus Root (Astragalus membranaceus) has been used throughout Asia for thousands of years and is considered one of the most important herbal tonics used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Also known as 'The Great Protector' this root is famed for its ability to stimulate the immune system and support the balance of the body's defence system.
Aside from its fame in TCM, modern science has helped shed some light on why Astragalus is such a potent immune tonic. Research has shown it can help stimulate the production of T-cells, NK cells, macrophages, immunoglobulin, interferon, and other important functions the body uses to effectively combat nasty bugs and things that compromise a healthy functioning body.
Astragalus contains unique polysaccharides and saponin fractions (such as Astragaloside IV) that have shown strong liver-protective immune-enhancing qualities. The flavonoid and saponin content in Astragalus provides strong antioxidant activity. These extremely potent compounds make Astragalus one of the greatest longevity-promoting tonic herbs.
In the video below, the brilliant Joe Hollis from Mountain Gardens shows you the growing and cultivating of the plant itself, and walks you through its amazing properties and uses!
Health Benefits:
- Supports cardiovascular system - due to its high antioxidant levels this root can help reduce blood pressure, prevent plaque build-up in arteries while protecting the inner walls of the vessels.
- Anti-ageing properties - reduces signs of ageing such as wrinkles & spots, helps in the growth of new tissue and can prevent symptoms of particular chronic illnesses.
- Supports the immune system - can control t-cells which regulate the body's immune responses, as well as acting as a natural antibiotic.
- Anti-inflammatory - the saponins and polysaccharides found in astragalus can reduce the inflammatory response in several illnesses and conditions.
Astragalus Root Spicy Cacao Recipe
Astragalus Root has a slightly bitter and sweet taste. It's also been described as "earthy". I tend to take it most commonly when I'm doing lots of surfing as it helps with my recovery but also lung health. Getting water on the lungs is nasty! So my go-to is a natural spicy hot choccy with some Astragalus root, it warms me up post-surf, gives me a nice buzz and helps any immediate cough I feel coming on.
I've recently started adding a 1/2 tsp of Teelixir Tremella as well for some natural sweetness and immune-boosting benefits - try it both ways and see what you think!
Ingredients:
Coconut Milk (Milk Lab- always!)
1 Tsp Raw Cacao
1/2 Tsp Cayenne Pepper
1/2 Tsp Teelixir Astragalus Root
Honey if you like it sweet (I find Coco Quench to be sweet enough)
Method:
1. Measure out the milk into whatever cup you are using and be sure to leave a couple of cms from the top for the cacao paste.
2. Pour milk out into a saucepan and heat until the milk starts to slightly simmer - don't let it boil!
3. Boil the kettle! While the milk is warming up, put cayenne pepper, astragalus, and cacao into your cup. Add a dash of boiling water and stir it around to make a paste, it should be completely wet but not a soup - the more water, the more diluted the flavour!
4. Add milk straight into the cup and stir it all up! Add honey/sugar etc to taste. Enjoy ;)
